Song of the week #5 -Some People

Song of the week #5

Some People

I was definitely chanelling my inner Paul McCartney when I wrote this song which was included on my 2019 album mE. I even made the drums sound like he was playing them! However, others have heard echoes of the Hollies and Squeeze as well.

I wrote and recorded it in just 15 days back in April and May 2019 immediately before I wrote Hampshire Born (which took just 11 days to complete!).  I certainly seemed to be on a mission in those days. Nowadays I'm lucky if I can write and record a song in that number of weeks!

Some People is a song with a message: a plea for tolerance for others' views and for people to be less evangelical about their own beliefs:

“But how can anybody dare to suggest
That their way is the way that's the best
‘cos no one’s come the same journey as you.
And no one knows where that journey's leading to."

I'm especially pleased with the acoustic guitar sound on this track. It's actually four separate tracks recorded using my Fender acoustic (capoed and not capoed) and my Variax guitar which emulates, among many other guitars, a 12-string acoustic. The lead guitar used another of my Variax emulations - a Les Paul electric, this time - and the string-bending technique comes directly from Jimmy Page (the opening of his Stairway to Heaven electric solo which I often played during my band days).

Some People

Some people need something to believe in
Well that’s okay
While others think that it’s only self deceiving
It’s had its day
But if it works then there’s nothing to say
'cos ev’rybody rolls a different way.

Some people need no-one to rely on
Well that’s okay
And some people need a shoulder they can cry on
From day to day
But when there’s trouble or if the times are tough
That certain someone might just be enough

Some people love one another
Don’t need to be a sister or a brother
Makes no difference their colour or creed
'cos everybody has the same old needs
Some people. Some people.

Some people need a team they can follow
Well that’s okay
While other people need to plough a lone furrow
In their own way
But this old world is a big enough place
For everybody in the human race

Some people love one another
They don’t need to be a sister or a brother
Makes no difference their colour or creed
'cos everybody has the same old needs
Some people. Some people.

But why should anybody dare to suggest
That their way is the way that’s the best
'cos no-one’s come the same journey as you
And no-one knows where that journey’s leading to.

Some people love one another
They don’t need to be a sister or a brother
Makes no difference their colour or creed
'cos everybody has the same old needs
Some people. Some people.
Some people. Some people
