  1. Box of Broken Memories
Share

This really happened. When moving house in the latter part of 2019 I found a box of slides and photos which I hadn’t looked at for years and I liked the idea of memories lying abandoned by those they belonged to. There was a bit of Keats that went into the lyrics (from Endymion) and musically there is more than a passing nod to Fleetwood Mac. (Written and recorded October – December 2019).

Lyrics

I found a box of broken memories
It lay there hiding in a corner of my mind
The lid was dusty and draped in cobwebs
The box had clearly been neglected for some time

I tried to open the box of memories
But it was fastened with a lock and silver chain
I wondered idly whose hand had locked it
And then I realised that I’m the one to blame

And so I held the key; it turned in all the locks
I opened up the lid and peered inside the box

And all the mem’ries came prancing
And singing and dancing
And they were dressed in coloured clothes of every hue
Parading past me as I watched spellbound
They laughed and beckoned me to join in what they do

And as I watched those dancing memories
I noticed every one was broken in some way
They needed mending and restoration
If they were going to sing and dance another day

And so I held the key; it turned in all the locks
I opened up the lid and peered inside the box

And all those mem’ries came prancing
And singing and dancing
And they were dressed in coloured clothes of every hue
Parading past me as I watched spellbound
They laughed and beckoned me to join in what they do

4. And then those mem’ries they turned full circle
They danced right back inside the box from where they came
With one last gesture for me to follow
They disappeared and left me wondering who to blame

And now I held the key; it turned in all the locks
I opened up the lid and peered inside the box

And all those mem’ries came prancing
And singing and dancing
And they were dressed in coloured clothes of every hue
Parading past me as I watched spellbound
They laughed and beckoned me to join in what they do

nd all those mem’ries came prancing
And singing and dancing
And they were dressed in coloured clothes of every hue
Parading past me as I watched spellbound
They laughed and beckoned me to join in what they do
To join their motley crew
