Another song written when I was emotionally at a low ebb. The vocal line was consciously influenced by Sam Cooke’s vocal style: the way he would approach a note from the one next to it. Just sing the line “Cupid, draw back your bow and let your arrow flow” to hear what I mean. Writing songs like this can be hugely cathartic: it gets it out of your system. Lyrics
Well if you show me somebody
With an untroubled heart
Then I will show you a liar
Because it only takes a minute
For your life to fall apart
And drop you deep in the fire
And if you tell me somebody
Has an untroubled mind
Well maybe they’re in denial
Cos there’s a better chance than even
That their world will unwind
To wipe away that silly smile
'Cos there’s no happy ever after
There’s no fairy tale in spring
Just a sea of endless trouble
That the winter storms will bring
Well there’s no darker place I know of
Than the places I have been
I should have seen it all arriving
And there were times that I remember
I had an untroubled heart
But now I’m barely surviving
'Cos there’s no happy ever after
There’s no fairy tale in spring
Just a sea of endless trouble
That those winter storms will bring
So where’s the light on the horizon?
Where’s the ford across the stream?
And where’s the ferryman to row you?
Well maybe someday I’ll lie easy
In an untroubled dream
And baby then I’m gonna show you
'Cos there’ll be happy ever afters
And a fairy tale in spring
No more seas of endless troubles
That the winter storms will bring
There’ll be calm and peaceful waters
‘neath a sky of endless blue
And my heart will be untroubled
And my mind will follow through
