The video for "One Day" is, at last, finished.
The themes of the song are sudden, and unexpected, tragedy and the emotional paralysis and anger that come about as part of the grief process. The treatment of the song was heavily influenced by Genesis and Phil Collins and I had a lot of fun recreating Phil's classic drumkit from the 80s with its, over-the-top, four racktoms and two floor toms. I also couldn't resist using his signature gated snare drum, first heard, of course, on his "In the Air Tonight". As always, I owe a huge debt to Mark Thomas for persuading me to make more use of the "real" drums and, especially, to include some cymbal swells, timpani rolls and tubular bell hits. As always, his instinct was uncannily spot on!
Other influences crept in as well, including the Bee Gees, Sting and, most notably, Pink Floyd for the closing minute-or-so where the influence of David Gilmour is unmistakeable in the soaring slide guitar solo.
I wanted the video to feel cold! And what better way to do this than to use an outdoor video shoot of me in the snow - except that the weather has steadfastly refused to oblige (so far this winter, that is) so I had to undergo a steep learning curve in programming Adobe "After Effects" to create the illusion that I was sitting in the middle of a snowstorm lip-synching the song.
Oh, by the way, I don't own a Roland TR-808 (more's the pity) but I found a way of creating the impression that I do...
I hope you enjoy it.
